So we win 5-1 and actually see a team performance worthy of the fans support. Was this Rafa Benitez's motivation and tactical genius that managed this or did they players collectively decide the fans deserved a full on display of what they're capable of?
How about the players were advertising their capabilities in the large shop window that was St. James' Park, in order to ensure a quick exit. Yeah, that appears much more likely....but not all. Not all the players will be like that. Just a certain few. Which one's were looking to be away?
Just take a look at their faces and body language after goals were scored. That should tell you enough.
I should be excited by a result like that but I'm not. I'm, not even bothered, because I can't buy into something that the players don't buy into.
You see - I'm a Newcastle United fan and I expect everyone who plays for us and is part of the club, either inside or outside, to be a fan, whilst working for the club. This includes the players on that pitch.
I didn't see much of that during the season, but here I am looking at what appears to be a full on team effort against a strangely poor Tottenham team that actually looked like they were the relegated team.
What a weird state of affairs.
One person in that game would have been nailed on for man of the match and he goes and gets himself sent off. Our very own Mitrovic, who fought for the cause and rattled Tottenham so badly at the back that they resorted to winding him up enough to make him do the one thing that would have been drilled into his head, time and time again. Do not retaliate by unfair means that gives a ref justice in sending you off.
He's been brilliant at it but failed against Tottenham because he allowed them to wind him up enough to over psyche him.
The strange thing is, his sending off didn't help them - it helped us. Why?
Because Mitrovic had done enough along with certain other players, to simply batter Tottenham into submission.
If this game was 10 games ago, I'd be jumping about and singing their praises from the roof tops. I enjoyed the game but not in the way that I should have.
So what does this game signify for us as a whole unit?
For me it 'hopefully' signifies the end of a lot of things wrong about this club and should awaken the inept, arrogant people running it, to get rid of the dross and make sure that what is left, is capable of effecting the forward thinking that is required, from board room to playing staff, to anyone connected to the everyday conditioning of the players in that club, from bottom right up to the top.
Out on that pitch, you saw players that fought in the whole game. You saw man of the match worthy performances by a good few, and yet, although 'as a neutral' you could almost believe it was for the football club cause in its entirety, you just know, as a fan, that to sell something, it has to be advertised to be shown to be clean and shown in good working order.
Some of our players done just that.
If Sissoko is wanting out, then he's done himself many favours with that performance, because he was man of the match for me. The Sissoko of old - but why pull off that display? Was it no pressure or a shop window exercise - or both?...You decide.
Townsend was an absolute thorn in Tottenhams side, but then again he's been doing it since he arrived. I don't know what his mindset is in terms of dropping down into the championship but if he leaves, I'm sure it will have been in his contract and at least he gave it his all since he came. Hopefully he stays.
Colback was another player who battled like hell and was a reason why Tottenham couldn't get into their stride. He was like a terrier and is one unsung hero at times, who doesn't get the credit he deserves.
Janmaat played well but his body language when he scored tells you everything about his mindset and it's not good for us.
Mbemba is a rock and gets better and better. Will we keep him?... I hope so because we need to build with this type of player.
Mitrovic; as I said, was a constant thorn in their side and took his goal brilliantly. I'd love to see him stay because he's got a lot to offer and his naive recklessness can be worked on to fine tune him.
Wijnaldum decided to play as well. 2 goals and a face like a fiddle. He can happily leave because he turns up when the pressure is off and is no good in a fight.
Tiote worked his socks off and to be fair he has done since he came back in. Now he can move to China like a good few others if they want to, because we need a revamp.
Aarons came on and looked well up for it. Scored a cracking goal as well as setting up one. Looked elated when he scored. Is this a kid who really wants to nail his colours to the mast but hasn't yet put pen to paper?
Who knows? Who knows anything with these players, except a few that stand out as clearly focused. I'll leave that up to you fans to guess. It's not hard, is it?
Taylor came in. Shop window for a quick clear out? Yeah, probably. Enough said.
Dummett is another player that is a trench like player. He will be an asset to us next season. Not the most gifted but certainly a bread and butter type.
Karl Darlow has every opportunity to become a top keeper for us if he gets his chance. Time will tell on him but he's showing more confidence and experience now. With more protection like he's been getting lately, it will enhance his game and help him cut out niggly mistakes as time goes on.
Shelvey is a player I'm not too sure about. I've not seen enough from him to suggest he could be good for the team on the pitch or in the dressing room. It might be wise to get rid and take a bit of a hit on him, if we have to. I'd like to be proved wrong but my gut feeling about him, is not positive.
